Was any seaside holiday ever complete without a visit to the summer show? On the Pier, perhaps, or in a seen-better-days Victorian theatre? The titles of the shows recall the period: The Fol-de-Rols, Sandy Powell's Startime; Cyril Fletcher's Summer Masquerade; Clarkson Rose's Twinkle.
‘CLARKIE’ and his partner OLIVE FOX presented their first TWINKLE on Ryde Pier in 1921.
TWINKLE did tours and summer seasons for the following 45 years, although winters were given
over to Pantomime, where Clarkie became one of our best-loved Dames.
The story of Twinkle is very much the story of seaside entertainment at that time. Clarkie and Olive settled in Eastbourne, where Clarkie’s doctor was the infamous John Bodkin Adams, alleged to have ‘eased the passing’ of 140 of his elderly female patients. Their stories, and others, are told in
CLARKSON ROSE AND TWINKLE; 45 YEARS OF SEASIDE ENTERTAINMENT.

This talk has been extensively rewritten and re-staged, and is now presented very much in the same style as GEORGE BERNARD SHAW: PLAYING THE CLOWN, but with the addition of songs and a dance - more like a solo performance than a straightforward talk. There will be simple props and costumes (all supplied) set in a small ‘performance area’.
This does mean, therefore, that it can no longer be done from behind a lectern, or a dining table.

Running time: around 50 minutes.
Lapel mike, please (if considered necessary).
